My husband made me this DIY Blending hackle substitute with some Large combs from the local $2 shop - he has drilled holes in each one and mounted them onto a long board - its unfinished as I could hardly wait to snatch it off him to use in spite of his protestations to "wait until the ................. thing is finished will you ?"
It isn't as sturdy as a steel pronged one obviously but it does the trick and so far I have only broken one of the plastic teeth and I am pretty tough with things so it seems to be holding up and Mr Handspinning points out the combs are cheap enough !!
